Google Documents

Google Documents are a perfect example of technological simplicity.  I love the live concept of this tool, the accessibility, and the ease of use.  This is such a powerful tool and I am excited to have had the opportunity to experiment and learn about Google Docs in two consecutive module assignments.

Google Documents-Spreadsheets: Organizing Data

The initial Google Docs assignment was to create a spreadsheet and make a mock grade-book with a sampling of students, grades and subject pages.  I can honestly say I have found the way I will manage my classroom data.  This was so easy to do and would be so easy to maintain and update.  I value the live working copy aspect of Google Docs allowing me to enter data from both work and home, always with the most recent copy available.  The convenience is astounding to me.

The ease of use is such a bonus for the students as well.  I will plan to use this tool to teach students how to organize any type of data they may encounter.  It is so simple to start up and so easy to update and use, the accessibility scans across all ages.

This tool is perfect for me, I don't know if I will be going back to Excel for my spreadsheets!

Google Documents-Forms: Collecting & Organizing Data

The next module assignment required the creation of a Google Docs form.  I have filled out so many of these types of surveys; this module was an excellent opportunity to learn how easy it is to create and design a form for multiple purposes.  What a fantastic discovery and one in which I plan on using many times in my future.  The amazing part of this tool is the accompanying spreadsheet that is connected to the form that collects and organizes all the data!

As far as implementing this into the classroom, the sky is limit!  I can use this for surveys, assessments or pre-assessments, questionnaires for parent volunteers, or even get down to the business of understanding sensitive situations going on in my classroom (forms or questionnaires about bullying or self-esteem).  Again, the ease of use for young students is such a plus; they can easily jump in and create a form with little instruction.  Better still, it is a green and paper-free means of gathering data and information.

Google Docs forms will be seen again and again in my future classroom!
